WHO ARE YOU? AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

I’m Desmond Moreira and I run a block management company looking after 1200 residential units. We look after the communal areas of the development to ensure they are well maintained.

I previously worked in social housing for many years and debt recovery, but my block management opportunity came when I purchased a flat in a new build scheme.

Like many new schemes, they are littered with issues from defects to management issues to basic service provisions, to name a few. Being interested, I took it upon myself to take action. I challenged the lack of remedial works and overall poor service.

But realised it could be done better.

That’s how I got started, I partnered with a new company who had experienced the same concerns as me. We took over the management of where I lived and organically acquired more schemes.

At the beginning of this journey, I had not run a business before and I recognised that I had to learn how. Fortunately, I invested in a six month training programme and as part of this five step programme I learnt how to pitch with Mike Harris who was the CEO of three £1bn companies. I learnt the power of being able to articulate a powerful pitch and realised the impact it has when trying to obtain new business.

But pitching was not just about closing a deal, or getting someone to sign on the dotted the line. It was about creating a meaningful connection with someone, a connection that would be shared and spoken of, to others. A pitch allows you to communicate your value with clarity, confidence and authority. It can separate you from the competition and elevate your position.

We all need to ‘Pitch’ but how many of us answer the question: “What do you do?” With real purpose and clarity? Often people shy away from the question, get sheepish, and almost apologise for it.

A powerful pitch starts with clarity and being able to articulate what you do in a simple opening sentence. It has to make sense to anyone; in the pub, in the boardroom, to anyone, anywhere.

If you don’t get it right, you won’t be listened to. You have to earn the right to be listened to. If I am unsure who you are, or what you do, I will switch off. Equally if I don’t think you are credible, I will stop listening.
